A graduate of UCC's Medical School, Michael was appointed Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at UCC in 1992. Michael previously held senior positions at the University of Chicago and at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School London, and worked at St Vincent's University Hospital Dublin and St Finbarr's Hospital Cork.
Dr Michael Murphy was appointed President of University College Cork in 2007. UCC is ranked as one of in the top 2% of Universities in the world, based upon the quality of its research output and peer esteem. It was Ireland’s first five star University (QS Stars 2011). UCC was voted best University in Ireland in the Sunday Times three times in the past decade. There are approximately 20,000 full time students registered at the University representing over 100 countries. The University is one of the largest employers in the region with in excess of 2,300 staff.
