A Boolean Christmas in Cork

Christmas 1850 Boole did not make it home to Lincoln.

It is funny how some things never change. Families want to be reunited for Christmas, we are distrustful of sending money through the post and a good walk after Christmas dinner always sounds like a great idea.

Boole’s letters home reveal a Cork Christmas where he enjoyed great hospitality and for those who wish to walk off the Christmas lunch you can find his preferred route in The Riverside Blog.

Interestingly the collection of Boole papers within the special collections department in UCC also holds a journal from Mary Ann Boole, George's sister. The journal contains a description of quite a different Christmas which she spent in Lüneburg, Germany in the employment of a Dr. Blennenthal.  Lüneburg is an historic commercial town in Lower Saxony just south of Hamburg.
