Symposium Celebrates the Transatlantic Founders of the Information Age
Industry and academia come together at the Boole Shannon Symposium as part of the continuing collaboration between MIT and UCC.
This week at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), industry and academia gather this week to discuss the evolution of modern communications from its origins in Boolean Algebra and its expression as information theory.
Education, industry and research are especially close in this field. Speakers will include Philip Fleming (CTO of Nokia Networks, North America), James Whelton (co-founder of CoderDojo), as well as leading academics from UCC and MIT.
In April 2016, MIT celebrates the centenary of researcher Claude E. Shannon, who drew upon the work of George Boole to develop his landmark paper on information theory in 1948. Throughout 2015, UCC celebrated the bicentenary of mathematician George Boole, whose fundamental work on symbolic logic underpins Boolean algebra. Both men had a major impact on the future role of communications.
Celebrations such as this event are vital as only now can we begin to understand the history of the ‘Information Age’.
As part of the Boole/Shannon Celebrations at MIT and UCC, the Compute & Communicate Lecture series has run throughout Autumn 2015 and Spring 2016. Events at MIT will continue through the 100th birthday of Shannon’s birth on April 30, 2016.
The Conversations Legacy Project at UCC has captured reflections from leading academics in the area of mathematics and computer sciences. The first tranche of interviews were released on George Boole Day. A second tranche of interviews with scholars, who in several cases personally knew Claude Shannon during his tenure at MIT, has now been released to coincide with the symposium.
