Plans have been filed to restore 5 Grenville Place, with university architects presenting plans to Cork City Council this week.

This week, UCC and the George Boole 200 programme have filed for planning permission from Cork City Council to restore No. 5 Grenville Place, Boole's former lodgings. He lived at Grenville Place from 1849 until 1855, where he had the freedom to fully develop his ideas on pure mathematics. This work culminated in The Laws of Thought, on which are founded the mathematical theories of Logic and Probabilities.

Our application seeks approval for a ground floor visitors’ centre and flexible open plan spaces for business and research above. Thanks to close cooperation with the council our project has now entered the planning stages and we look forward to sharing this vision as our fundraising campaign launches in early June.

Learn more about UCC's deep connection with the legacy of George Boole through this timeline of the campaign to save Grenville Place. The Boole Library at University College Cork first acquired Boole's papers in 1982, enabling Professor Des MacHale to produce a thorough biography of the forefather of the information aage. Over the intervening decades, the University Archives have catalogued and now digitised Boole's papers for public access.

A continuing dedication to the Boolean legacy at UCC drives this joint effort with Cork County Council to restore the historic lodgings house at 5 Grenville Place. Stabilisation works will proceed and the property will change hands later this year. Plans for the building are available for public viewing from the council; expect to hear more from us in the upcoming months!
